Next week, one of my favourite 'things'.... it's OCEAN CARE DAY!
I'm one of the  artists exhibiting in the Artist Tent on Manly Beach, at the end of the Corso.
Along with the pieces I'm showing I will be bringing along my Under the Blue Moon Festival finalist sculpture so those on 'this side' can get a peek. :)
LOVE Ocean Care Day... it's so much fun as well as informative. Because looking after this world is what my art is all about it's very exciting to be asked to be a part of the day. Music, kids activities, Ocean Lab, Rock Platform Walks... an awesome day.
SO next Sunday 5th December Manly Beach. 10:30am - 4:30pm. See you there! :D

Mandala Collages

  Another supporting series in my solo exhibition Recycled Rejections is "The Intersection of Mornings". I love meditation and creating mandalas. A big discovery was this form of mandala and my continuing evolution with it. I've collected the patterns from various sources and recreated them in pen and ink onto an old dictionary from 1950. It is beyond repair and I felt this gives the beautiful text and pages a new way of interpretation. The tiny line drawings are exquisite and I've worked with them in my mandalas.
In addition, there are found treasures, feathers and things I've found while on my runs and hikes in the early mornings.
I seem to get my best visions and ideas then and there is something magickal about finding items left from the night. Being first to see it, to wonder how, why, who.
At present I am working on two very large mandalas in this style which will be featured next year in the Frameworks external exhibition with the Manly Art Gallery. Very exciting. I have incorporated my passion and studies with Sacred Geometry, along with my love of all things Joseph Cornell for this and am so pleased that the gallery is recognizing this wonderful accessible way to present artwork.

SCA Undergrad Show

Took Maddison in for the Portofolio Development day yesterday and we got to see the Sydney College of the Arts Undergraduate Show. WOW! Seriously you wont see anything better out there in the galleries. It was amazing.

Cockatoo!

Not the best photos of this friend I'm afraid. Will retake this week, when I get a chance! I have filled the inside of the egg she is holding with a clockwork.  The body of my cockatoo was created with a few of my amazing treasures that all seemed to come together out of no where to fit perfectly. Exciting when that happens. She also features more of one of my recycled wedding dresses. Lots of handpainted silk. It's a great material to work with and the older the better.

LAST WEEK!

Owl - The Only Story.

Another in the series "The Private Evolutionary Plans of Birds" showing at my solo exhibition at present. There are 10 in this series and this, my owl is titled: 'The Only Story You Will Ever Need'.
His head was a huge undertaking which slowed up a lot of my work for a week. Remember when I was saying that I'd had a wonderful idea BUT it was taking a lot of work to realize my idea? Well this is the reason!! Worth it though. The feathers are made with a process I've worked out with metal and paints combined with snips of furnishing material from a swatch book.
As all my friends know I ADORE owls! He is a true Recycled Rejection because he is also created from an older sculpture which didnt really work out.
A lot of my work naturally features things which really mean something personal to me. I guess when I'm looking for things, either street, garage sale or charity store, the things that pluck the heart strings and memory will sparkle the brightest in my eyes.
So speaking of eyes, my owl has SPIROGRAPH eyes! Loved spirograph.... still do actually.... stay tuned. Come on!! You don;t think I could resist playing with those 'eyes' before giving them to owl, do you? :)

LorriKEATS

Another in my bird series "The Private Evolutionary Plans of Birds" showing at my solo Reconciled Rejections running now. This is "Love Really Will Find a Way or LorriKeats" 61x 27x 22 cm
I was VERY excited to find a use for all those plastic strapping tapes that Shanghai me in my day job! This pieece was something special as its the first sculpture of two interacting birds I've created. Reminded me of my Grope Show exhibition inclusions. Made me feel I need to create more along these lines. And on the day job... I often smile when people comment that it must be GREAT to be able to take advantage of staff discounts... no... it's the stuff they THROW OUT that excites me!!

blue bottles, 1960s amber shot glasses, wooden carved heart bead, blue strapping tape, ribbons, hand dyed (by me) reclaimed silk, tea chest metal strapping, whiskey decanter 1970s, wooden plank (HMAS Penguin, Sydney), clays, paint, wire.

The Nests

I'm loving watching the reaction to these in my exhibition... YES what DO they mean?
Well... as a child I was obsessed with Science Fiction. I started on Arthur C Clarke and Asimov and oh yes I am a MASSIVE fan of  the Harry Harrison series. (explains the whole rat thing now?) Dune? oh yeah! And on and on.....OK so these Nests are my little surreal Science Fiction dreams.
The series features five works "Inevitable Transformations". What will birds have to use if we destroy all the trees? Can they adapt? A little post apocalyptic but not without hope.
The first shown here is "The Penultimate Inevetibility" 57 x 32 x 21cm

Oh yes the story re the bases to all my free standing sculptures in this exhibition.
They are all part of Australian Naval history.
Parts of the old range wharf at Pittwater and the HMAS Penguin Balmoral wharf.
Another way of recycling, not only in a material sense but I feel giving this beautiful wood from this long forgotten tree a loving new purpose.

Shoe Shrines

As a lot of you know, I lived in San Diego USA for a time. It had a profound influence on my art, I became a sculptor and an assemblage artist at that time and I became more connected with expressions of spirituality. My own and others. Nichos are shrines that are made of just about anything in Mexico. They just about always contain a nich (a little hole, window or doorway) where an icon of some sort is displayed. I've never seen a shoe one BUT I was influenced to create theses after seeing some wonderful ones created from lightbulbs and tin cans.
These "Shoe Shrines" make up the series "The Desirable Outcome" in my Reconcilied Rejections solo exhibition rnning at present. Each has an image of Mary and an egg.
My intent was to create a piece which symbolized our need to put the protection of the future generations of birds ahead of our own material desires. The current plight of the Manly Little Penguins and the development of restaurants and nightclubs made me think of beautiful shoes PROTECTING eggs instead of dancing above them.  So YES the Desirable Outcome.
They actually hang simply from one hook, here they are displayed in the the gallery on wire. There are 12 in this series.
