Flowers of the Night Feed

Floriade, Deadlines and Zines and how they sometimes work...

Is it really over yet?

Floriade 1_edited-1
view from my Canberra room

Last Friday saw me driving to Sydney to place the second of my new book series into the hands of my Australian publisher.

Floriade 7
... Rockpool Publishing then Floriade or bust!

It felt good. I can't tell you exactly what that feels like but I will tell you it is a heady mix of relief, excitement, elation, numbness and outright fear...

"Have I  'done it'  right?"
"Is it really over?"
"It can't be, I missed something"
and so on.
Oh and that feeling of wanting to rip it back out of your publishers hands as a heat descends on your body from the writing gods above when she/he comments on something you know you probably haven't included...
"I'm so looking forward to seeing the part on Zombie eating leaves *or insert whatever it was you might of alluded to in your pitch*"
So now your book gets edited... da da daaaaaaaaaaaaaa and I am kinda over the whole "the editor will think I'm an uneducated halfwit" because, well, basically other than a focused uneducated passion for botany I probably am, having left school at about 15. If it wasn't for spellcheck, I probably wouldn't be published. I can not spell, grammar? mmmmm well I know how to speak proper but any of the finer points? I thank the stars for wonderful editors!
Oh yes and thanks to an accident many many moons ago, I can only bash way at the keyboards with a few fingers of my right hand. Yes I've tried all the voice activated dictation programs but I think my accent annoys them. I seem to think better with the few fingers that do work on my right hand anyway. Maybe thats my superpower? mmmmm
Studio
In my studio...forget about those fancy pants glossy 'in my studio photo spreads'
this right here is what 8 hours before a book deadline looks like.

But.. I love what I do and the opportunity to share it is something I'm forever grateful for. My passion to learn as much as possible about Ethnobotany (the relationship between plants and people) has filled my life with so much meaning and purpose for decades and along the way I have also learned how to craft that into something to share.

So once you hand in your First Draft, what you do not want to do is then jump back in your car and go on a road trip right after handing over a few months of sweat, tears and sizeable chunk of your sanity to your publisher. Do not do it. Oh yes, you will tell yourself that this is your holiday, treat, relaxing time. It will not be. You should go home, put on your grungiest PJs, find a very long TV series that you haven't watched because your last year has been spent writing in your universe, not escaping in theirs and you should snuggle up with a warm blanket (or friend who will not judge or more importantly talk!) and flake right out. You need to disappear and do SFA. When you finish doing it, you need to do it again. and again...

But, truth be told I did in fact enjoy Floriade in Canberra!
Big floriade

What's not to love. My best friend lives there (damn it I should of just stayed longer and flaked on her couch under her cats, I could still be there).
There is also Flowers right now, over a million of them and it was good to see them, real good.
They had all just about burst into bloom the day before and so it was unlike any Floriade I'd ever experienced. Firstly, because rumour had gotten round that there were no flowers yet, the crowds were right down and secondly all the flowers were fresh and bright, new and well... there!
If I had of gone a week before I would not of seen them and in this very hot spell we are having on the East Coast, if I had of gone a week later, I would of seen cooked flowers and so I went at the right time. The Flowers made me feel chirpy and hanging with Jan always makes me feel great. It would of been better with a cat blanket but I'll remember that for next time.
Hang on! ~ mental note: DO NOT AGREE TO DEADLINES AT FLORIDA TIME.
Floriade 2
Floriade is all about... flowers!

I did a few things at Floriade I can't tell you about just yet. Such is the way of writing and publishing and people not wanting other people to know what some people are doing in case they do what those people are doing too but I did flowers things which are good.

Don't worry BigW, problem solved.....there are still Christmas trees for the Flower Crazy People!

Back home to garden this week
Garden 1
(I have a strict limit on time away policy so I can actually do what I write about) and I found that my new herb garden has gone bananas, or rather dill and comfrey and the beetroot, fennel and cos are ready and delicious. Some bird chopped two of my zucchinis seedlings to pieces. I'm assuming it was a bird or a pack of rather feral insects who decided to rip them apart and not eat them. I get needing to munch on my veggie garden so that you can survive but I'm not a fan of plant vandalism or hunting for sport.

I'm pondering what to replace them with today or a plan of defence.
Clivia 1
I do grow flowers too! Clivis which mean ~ inner strength and letting go of fear.

And so to Zines.
Last year I produced and released an Artist Edition of my Flowers of the Night Oracle
I am really proud of that work. It was exciting and just outright fun putting it together. I learned a lot about what I wanted to do in future and what i did not want to do. I learned that people still don't realise I create the art for my own work (stop sending me horrible messages saying I'm dreadful for not crediting the artist! its me and putting my name twice on the cover would just look too egotistical) I learned that really putting your work out there in your pure voice bought a lot of praise but equally loads of criticism but it made me stronger in what I believe. All of the criticism focused on how my deck wasn't like other oracle decks and didn't work the same. Well, good! It is always Nature first in my work. Always. Plants are not humans, they are not there just for us. We have a relationship with them which works both ways. I've made lots of mistakes, a few misinterpretations and followed paths to nowhere on my personal quest but that's what exploration is all about.

FlowersOfTheNight_box_front
new box for Flowers of the Night Oracle

I think it is an important lesson to learn that you are not compulsory and that probably the majority will not like, understand or want your work if you are working within a defined and focused field. If you are out there creating whatever may come because you are looking to be successful in a broad genre then maybe you do need to change and bend to the popular vote but I am not and so I will not. Usually I hear confirmation that what I am doing is right in the words of those who are negative. Sometimes I hear really valuable suggestions and so I will take those on board. I am just selective because the Work I do is more important than trying to please.

Oh yeah and so to Zines.
Flowers of the Night Oracle is being released now by a traditional publisher, (Rockpool Publishing) a couple actually, both in Australia and the USA and UK this November. There are slight updates to it including a revised Guidebook and card format. Oh and the box is different. Because my decks take years to create (I have one now that is not going to be released until 2019 at the earliest and I've worked on since 2012), I collect a huge amount of information in my journals. I also create lots of artwork along the way too and so with this release I am gifting a Zine of Flowers of the Night with the first 99 orders for it from me (I have to keep one for myself!).

Oh yes! IT COSTS TOO MUCH IN POSTAGE TO BUY FROM YOU
I do get a lot of people asking me if I can please offer free postage like *insert online book seller* Um no.
When you buy from me, you get my signature on my book. Ok now this may mean nothing now but what if I was to turn out to be the next Steven King?
Just saying' ;)
Seriously what you also get is extra treats that are worth more than the postage cost. Artworks, prints, flower and plant stuff, seeds if you are in my  country and love, lots and lots of love!
To be honest, running an online shop is not my job. Writing books and illustrating stuff and creating art is.
I also only make a few dollars profit on each title I sell through my online shop. I charge what the post office charges me to post your things and unfortunately I don't post 100,000 items a day so I can't get that mega postal discount but I try hard to make it worthwhile for you because I like making friends with people who like what I like.
I'm also a fan of collecting special things from authors I like so I try and do the same for those who may feel the same.

THE ZINE!
FON gift pack

So that is what I'm doing right now! Making a mysterious, cool (I hope!), plant filled, flower bursting, night lovely ZINE for you all and I am LOVING IT!
There are loads of original little artworks and inclusions and today I'm actually working out how to create a moon on something transparent to use as the cover (can I hear you all say OHHHHHHHHH).
I think I'm down to 40 odd copies left that will include this Zine and no I will not be releasing it separately. Publishing contracts will not allow it. This is a completely handmade (by me!) Zine.

I am going to be around a bit more, it has been a huge few months of completing books and decks and I am very grateful for those friends who like my work and have stuck around even if I'm not so 'huge on social media'. I really appreciate you and hope you will enjoy next year what this year has let me do.

OK off to sort out my Moon creative art challenge for your Zine!

Bunches of blessings to you,
Cheralyn 🌷

❀ The Night Flowers are here!

FLOWERS OF THE NIGHT ORACLE
It has been the busiest two weeks of my life, honestly without exaggeration!
I really appreciate the patience of so many of you as I pack your Flowers of the Night Oracle Decks and get them posted out to you.
This is something that I do have to do alone. I would actually love to hire someone to help out with these things but due to where I live and the nature of my work and timings, it's really not possible at present, so it is left to me alone when these 'events' happen.

Here is Arrival Day for me!

Right now I am getting dozens of enquiries each day as to whether there are any deck remaining or if they can be purchased in a store and the answer is yes there are some left and the only place they are available is through my online store here ~

Deeper understanding and mastery of energies connected with intuition. Have a gut feeling about something but often feel unsure? Sea Moonflower brings clarity through it's balancing of emotion and thought.

Listen to your dreams, messages and visions. Sea Moonflower will often come up when we are ignoring or misinterpreting what we know at a base level to be true.

Gardening Notes:
Also know as Morning Glory, they grow just about anywhere and pref a full sun position and access to lots of water. They can be choking weed to our waterways and native plants so please plant (if at all) with extreme care.

FLOWER OF THE DAY ~ ❁Tuberose (Polyanthus tuberose)

Tuberose WEBCARD new

Will Assist You in:
Finding your focus and sticking with it. Tuberose supports those who are finding it hard to stick with their path by showing creative ways to enjoy the everyday and it also assists those looking to inspire desire and passion ~ creative, romantic and sexual.

Language of Flowers Oracle:
Temptation for something rather dangerous but still pleasurable may be coming your way. You are warned to proceed carefully and be sure you are in possession of all the facts. There is a chance of deception.
Focus is required at present, don't drift off into daydreams and remember to stay true to your original desires and plans.
Creative projects have a greater scope for success at present and the next steps perhaps only thought out at this stage, should be actioned at this time.
The generosity shown now will have great benefit later. Conversely, if you accept the gifts of others, be aware that there may be strings attached which will pull on you later.

Flower Lore:
Tuberose has a beautiful entwined history with seduction, love and even death. In India it is a flower of Wedding celebration, used to ensure amorous feelings between the newlyweds. In France woman are warned not to wear it's perfume or experience it's fragrance after nightfall in case they fall under it's spell and become over amorous with any man who crosses their path.
A very popular funeral flower with the English Victorians, it came to actually symbolise death itself for a while and the superstition arose that one should never sit in a room alone with one for death would surely find you.
A perhaps more aligned to the real Language of Tuberose tradition is the giving of a single blossom to another to indicate your undying passion.

Gardening Notes:
Tuberose are native to Mexico and so do very well in similar climates. Plant bulbs in late Winter to early spring for Summer flowering. A night flower which adores full sun to grow well.

A little more about our little bat ~

In the Flowers of the Night Oracle Deck, I have depicted The Tubed~lipped Nectar Bat (Anoura fistulata) with another Flower which it
shares its environment with, Trumpet Flower and both are found in Ecuador.
The flower shown in the above video is Centropogon nigricans and it's believed that this plant co-evolved with the Tube-lipped Nectar bat is it is it's only pollinator.
So why didn't this flower end up in the Flowers of the night Oracle? Well that's a story for another deck ;)

bunches of blessings,

❁ How Can You Explore Your Passion & Power with an Oracle Deck?

Researching and studying ethnobotany (the relationship between people and plants), the language of flowers, healing modalities which are flower~based, the traditions, myths, folk and herbal lore of flowers, I found time and again, the patterns which lead me to easily creating Flower Oracles based on themes which relate to us directly. This is a foundation of ethnobotanical study and makes it rather easy to create a tool for personal growth, healing and guidance. My new Oracle Deck ~ 'Flowers of the Night Oracle' is part of my over three decade commitment to the study of flowers and us and the themes of power and of passion ran strong and true through all flowers which either blossom at night or have physical attributes which the night enhances such as a far stronger fragrance.
We can not have access to all the flowers of the world every day in our pocket, so it was my hope many years ago to create oracle decks which would share the Flower Wisdom and Lore with everyone, no matter the season or where they found themselves. There is great truth in following the signs of the seasons which surround you but even in the most ancient traditions, people have used images and dried botanicals and taken much interest in the dreams and visions of those plants not in season or in the immediate surrounds to guide and support. The absence of something and our continued connection with it actually shows a stronger connection to it's meaning, message and gifts.

Exploring your Passion and Power with The Flowers of the Night Oracle
Within the Guidebook of the Oracle there are reading spreads and other suggestions for using this deck for yourself and for others. Readings can answer questions and assist with topics focused on finding your passion in life, in understanding why it may be difficult to find or to stay true to the course began. Suggestions on additional paths to explore and solutions to difficult issues which have arisen. The meanings of these Flowers are naturally stronger than others and they are clear, focused and very easy to follow. They may in fact at times be a little too strong. Think of Jasmine. At times we may enjoy and in fact need to have our senses flushed with the aroma, and be tangled with it in our hair as we pass through a summer filled arch of it's glory but at other times perhaps just a faint remembrance on a warm breeze is enough. We do not want to be overwhelmed with it's intoxication. Floramancy, Flower Reading with the Flowers of the Night, needs to be approached in the same way.
Exploring your Passions can be a subject which requires additional illumination. Passions which are aligned with romance, creativity, career, friendships, life direction, blocks, these are areas which benefit from the wisdom and the energy of the Flowers which connect with the Shadows, with the Night. These Plants bloom strong and clear in the evening, they call out in the darkest night with their fragrances, their energy , empowered by the moon and stars and bring with them strong messages which you may learn from and align with.

Fox tv Damask violet ecardExamples

As I mentioned, oracle reading spreads are included in the Guidebook and you can use these for general readings along with reading spreads that you may already know and any topic
can be explored. By using the Flowers of the Night Oracle cards, you will see readings which are a little stronger in emotion and message, particularly over other Flower Oracle Reading Cards. For example, a simple three card spread exploring the past, present and future of an issue could bring up Night Flowers which share messages connected with themes such as sensuality, awareness, intuition. Flowers of the Night would be showing you that the answers may lie in how you feel about a the issue, that you are becoming more aware of these feelings and perhaps you could use you intuition a little more when looking towards the future. I would use this Oracle if I felt drawn to do so in a general reading, if I wanted to explore the powers and foundations that surround the issues or the passions and emotions which drive it.

If you wanted to explore the theme of Passion more closely, this deck is perfect. The Flowers all connect and align beautifully with Power and with Passion and you will find it very easy to attain deeper insight into both. Use the provided spreads or others and once you settle on your direction of discovery, you will find that the Flowers drawn from the deck with provide a very clear path to follow. Assistance is offered to those working out what their passion, their passion is, how they can better attain a life which is filled with this passion and how to overcome challenges. Guidance and clarity can also be found in matters of romance and of the heart, including close friendships. Questions can be answered and timelines can be formed to give you a plan and direction.

Card of the Day
In a similar way your powers can be examined. What is it that is hindering you? What needs to change? How can you strengthen your resources or even find them. The Flowers of the Rose 1 Night will bring forth these answers in any oracle spread you use or even more simply as a Card of the Day. I find drawing a Flower of the Night from my growing deck each evening to be a fascinating lesson. I can see what it is that I could focus on internally that night in order to make a change for the coming day. For example, last night I drew The Rose of Mexico and it's themes are strength and resilience, of over coming what may seem insurmountable. That night I did lie in bed and had a few moments of reflection were I realised that I had been worried about a difficult issue. I felt so much better as I calmed myself and focused on being stronger with hesitation the following day.

Flower Therapy
All of my Flower Reading Oracle Cards are based on the Tradition of Floramancy, a divination tradition which aligns with the Language of Flowers but has a far greater connection with the Doctrine of Signatures and Herbal Lore. Because of this, the cards can be used in healing modalities as the actual attributes which you will find in these modalities are the same. In Flowers Essence Therapy they work wonderfully an additional attribute resource and prescribing tool. In creative meditation they could provide a focus and in all healing modalities as a guide to the properties and wisdoms of the Flowers. The Flowers of the Night, with their nature focus on Passions and Power could also be a really interesting counselling tool. Those working with aromatherapy could also find it an interesting resource to explore the properties of those flowers suitable in this modality.

If you would like to know any more about this Oracle or any of my work with Flowers
or have any questions,
I would love to hear from you.

Until then,
May Nature and flowers bless you always,
❁Cheralyn xx

Flowers of the Night, an Exhibition

I have an incredibly huge body of work which I've enjoyed researching while sharing snippets here and there with my social media world friends and in person which explores the fascinating  world of the Flowers of the Night. The focus began, I would say about 5 years ago now and has touched my life each and every day since then.
Moonflower lino 8
Today I was asked to hold a solo of this work and so later this year I will be exhibiting the artworks, journals, sketches and recycled object sculptures that have been the wonderful companions which I've created along the way and hopefully soon I will have a publication to share with you. It's been a such big part of my life for so long now and although my mind is set on one 'end result' the subject lends itself to so much more and my heart is dancing with possibilities I never dreamed of in the beginning. Sometimes a concept grows a life far beyond what you wished for when you began your art dreams and that is something very special when it occurs.
